Tipper trailer

A tipper trailer is a special kind of utility vehicle and truck. The tipper trailer consists of a tipping bridge and a tractor unit. The tractor unit has, instead of a cargo area like a truck, a coupling with a kingpin on which the trailers is mounted on.

The tipper bridge serves for the transport of bulk materials like sand or gravel. The tipping bridge has a tipping mechanism with which the chassis of the tractor unit is connected.

With the aid of this mechanism the cargo area can be tilted for let the load slide down. Every tipper has one rigidly mounted tailboard towards the driver’s cabin. Depending on the construction type, tippers are categorized in rear dump trucks, two-way tippers and three-way tippers.

The rear dump truck is only able to open one tailgate. Two-way tippers are able to open the left and right sidewall for unloading. This type of construction is not that usual anymore. The three-way tipper is the most common construction model. This one has three walls which can be opened.

Tipper trailers in public traffic are used for public offices, for example for road maintenance depots or park commissions. Further dumpers are also used for agriculture. Here is a special kind of tipper useful the crop dumper, this one can be closed with a tarpaulin in order to protect the load against weather influences.

If tipper trailers are used in road traffic, often a tractor unit and a truck chassis is used while dumpers in agriculture are often tractors used as prime movers because they are able to drive in all-terrain.
