A semi-trailer is the result of a combination of a certain tractor, also called prime mover, and a trailer.
Instead of a leading area, the tractor is equipped with a semi-trailer coupling.
Part of the tractor is also a so called chassis with a driver’s cab, a steer and drive axle and the engine including the gear unit. To attach the trailer to the tractor, the semi-trailer coupling is fixed to the frame. This construction is also called hitch plate.
The semi-trailer coupling consists of a plate and an installed closing mechanism. This mechanism locks with the so called kingpin of the trailer. This system ensures that both parts of the vehicle are firmly but still flexible attached to each other.
The trailer is supplied with compressed air in order to operate the braking system. The vehicle lighting and other devices are powered by electricity.
