Semi-trailers represent a special kind of trailer.
What makes this vehicle so special is the fact that it has to be attached to a tractor in order to be mobile as it is a non-motorized vehicle. It also has just a rear axle, as the front part of the trailer lies upon the tractor. Both vehicles are linked with a hitch plate and a so called king pin.

The most common trailers are the tandem trailers or tridem trailers, accordingly equipped with 2 or 3 axles.
Semi-trailers have become indispensable for the transport of goods.
Due to their maximum size of 13.68 m x 2.55 m they are shorter than the most articulated trucks (maximum size around 15 m) but they come with some essential advantage, as for example with a much greater loading area which simplifies the shunting and driving of the whole vehicle.

In addition to that, the authorized payload of a semi-trailer is far higher as the payload or normal trailers, as its dead load is lower. Due to that, it is possible to transport more freight with a higher weight.
Another advantage of the semi-trailer is its price. In the most cases, one pays less for a semi-trailer than for an articulated truck.

There are various superstructures for semi-trailers which are all aimed at different kinds of goods and their secure and rapid transport.
The container chassis is a good example. Its chassis is designed especially for the carriage of ISO-containers. During the transport, the container is secured by a locking bolt which is placed at the bottom side of the chassis.
Another example is the refrigerated trailer. Its special interior design allows the transport of chilled cargo with a temperature from + 30 to – 30 degrees without breaking the cooling chain. Refrigerated trailers are used for food- as well as for nonfood-articles.
Another very common type of trailer is the Tautliner. Instead of solid quarter panels this vehicle is equipped with a tarpaulin-cover. This cover is attached to small rolls, so it is easy to open and close it.

During the transport, lashing straps secure the tarpaulin-cover and the freight is well protected.
The Tautliner is a very popular semi-trailer as it is quite simple to load and unload the freight using the side walls. In addition to that, the lateral loading length is enlarged for what reason far more freight can be loaded.

Further types of semi-trailers are the tank-semitrailer used for the carriage of gas and oil, the dump trailer and the innovative moving floor trailer. The technology of this vehicle enables the automatically controlled loading and unloading of bulk material as well as general cargo by using a hydraulic controlled floor.

All these different semi-trailers have one advantage in common – they can all be freely combined with any possible tractor! So the purchase of different semi-trailers and a tractor is worth the investment.
