In the most cases the tarpaulin covers have a weight which differs between 650 g and 850 g per square meter. Their advantage in comparison to trailers with solid side walls is their far lower weight. Due to this, the total weight of the vehicle is lower, too, and one can charge more goods.

Furthermore, the tarpaulin covers are hardly inflammable and extremely durable and resilient. They are able to withstand temperatures of -40 °C up to 70 °C.
The most recent version of the curtain side trailer is the tautliner semi-trailer. Here, the vehicle is equipped with a continuous curtain instead of several individual ones. By this, it becomes easier to charge goods as one can use the entire length of the vehicle. This means a great time-saving.
