A tipper, or tipping bridge means a special kind of utility vehicle. This kind of truck is also called dump truck. Tippers are mostly used for the transport of bulk materials.

The tipping bridge on the cargo area is connected to the chassis of the truck. When the tipping mechanism is operated, the load area is tilted, so that the load slides down. There are three different kinds of tippers:

Rear dump trucks are only able to open the tailgate, while all other tailboards are rigidly mounted. The two-way tipper is able to open the left and right tailboard for unloading. The most usual kind of construction is the three-way tipper. Like the name says, this vehicle is able to open three tailboards except the one behind the driver’s cabin. The three tailboards can be opened separately.

Tipper vehicles are often applied in civil engineering, for example for road maintenance depots. Tippers in agriculture are often used as crop tippers with a closed body or a tarpaulin to close the trailer and protect it against climatic influences.
