Long-distance is as the term already says the transport of persons and freight over streets or rails across large distances. Long-distance traffic is subdivided in inland traffic and international traffic (transit). The transport of goods and freight over short distances is called local traffic. In local public transport there are bargaining associations and transport conditions which do not take part in long-distance traffic.
Long-distance traffic was prescribed as a transport zone over 50 km after the war. Today transport distances over 151 km length are called long-distance. One kind of road transport is the liner traffic. This is an inner German forwarder groupage freight which means a transport of changing goods between two places. The final destination is generally a logistics center or a warehouse of an incoming forwarder. Another kind of the liner traffic is the crossover traffic which takes place on roads. Two trucks are meeting and exchanging their goods, mostly they are fitted with a swap body or a semitrailer which can be exchanged.
Another kind of long-distance traffic is the tramp traffic. There are part or complete loads transported to the final destination, here the goods are unloaded and other freight is loaded into the truck. On the way back to the starting point the load is dropped at different delivery locations. The possibility to use tramp traffic is offered by national and international internet freight exchange.

The truck drivers are called truckers. These need to have a special driver’s license to carry heavy loads. Long-distance truckers must have a driver card in which the speed and the driving time period. Here one can read if the driver adheres the rest and drive time. For example a long-distance trucker is not allowed to exceed the daily driving time of 9 hours.
There are special long-distance vehicles which are used for transports of goods across large distances. Manufacturers of vehicles for long-distance traffic are for example Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Renault and MAN. The vehicles are specialized on the freight which should be transported. A distinction is made between the vehicles in volume freight, refrigerated transport, tank transports, silo transports, vehicle transports and general cargo. Mercedes-Benz has designed especially for long-distance freight the models Actros and Axor. These have a low consumption and a low own weight. The trucks can be fitted with different bodies like for example swap body vehicles or governmental and special vehicles. Also the manufacturer MAN Truck &Bus offers different solutions for the long-distance traffic. The models TGX and TGS are especially designed for driving services in long-distance freight. Also the Scania R 420 qualifies as professional in the transport of goods in long-distance traffic. The possibility to change the freight container the truck is universally applicable.
