Tractors for heavy duties

An articulated vehicle is the combination out of a tractor unit or also called semitrailer truck and a trailer which is also called semitrailer. A tractor unit bases on a truck chassis. So an articulate vehicle consists of a prime mover with its driver’s cabin, axles and the coupling on which the trailer is attached.

The tractor unit has a coupling instead of a cargo area like a normal truck. This coupling has a closing mechanism which enables to fix the trailer on the kingpin. So the trailer is solidly fixed but also flexible. Often prime movers are often shorter as normal trucks.

For transporting goods with a tractor unit a semitrailer needs to be mounted.
The semitrailer is fed over the coupling by the tractor unit with energy for the lighting and ABS plus compressed air for the brake system. A semitrailer does not have a front axle but one to four back axles, because the tractor unit is shorter, the semitrailer can be longer than usual trailers.

A heavy duty tractor unit is characterized by its ability to move weights up to 250 tons. The heavy duty tractor unit bases on a truck chassis. That means as in normal tractor units the heavy duty prime mover consists of a driver’s cabin, the motor, the axles and the coupling. At the coupling the semitrailer is mounted which is used for the transport of heavy duties.

Heavy duties are cargo transports which are not dimensionally correct and weigh too much for classic trucks. Heavy duties can only be transported from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 15 p.m.
