Dump trucks

The term tipper means an extensive range of utility vehicles in this kind of construction for different purposes. These differences are reflecting in the construction. There are dump trucks which are mounted on a chassis or coupled on the tractor as a trailer.

Dump trucks are available in different sizes. Small dump trucks have a vehicle breadth of only 1,5 m but with a loading capacity of about 1m³ and are generally used for communal purposes. They are applied for example for waste disposal. The heaviest dump trucks which are allowed on public roads are able to carry 8-15 tons of material. They have high steel walls.

Their bigger brothers are called “*dumpers*”. They are applied in open-cast mining for example in a stone quarry and are able to carry 400 tons! These are the biggest dump trucks in the world. Between these and normal dump trucks are the heavy duty dumpers. These are semitrailers or walking floor trailer with tipper bodies. These are generally applied in civil engineering. Dump trucks are designed for carrying bulk materials. For this purpose the manufacturers are fitting the dumpers with appropriate hydraulic systems. These are able to lift up 25 m³. These semitrailers are available as rear dump trucks and three-way tippers. They are able to transport up to 30 tons.

Of such gigantic masses nobody ever dreamed of in the 1920s when the first modern dump trucks with hydraulic systems were invented, although even these were a huge progress. In agriculture and in transports often cranes and shovel systems are applied but still with the aid of horse power. But even when electric motors and utility vehicles with diesel engines were used, there were no innovative solution for the quick unloading of bulk materials like cereals, sand or coal. This was improved with the development of hydraulic systems.

For the sake of completeness it must be said that there are also semitrailers for the transport of liquids or gases silo and tank trailers are used. Some special manufacturers are not only offering silo tippers, they are producing also tipper trailers and tipping bridges for mounting on different kinds of trucks.

Manufacturers which are designing solo dump trucks can be found in whole Europe. Further almost all truck manufacturers have already completed standard tipper in their assortment.
