A box body trailer is a kind of utility vehicle which can be connected to a tractor unit or as a truck body.
The box body has solid walls which form a closed body. Often the box body is firmly fixed to the chassis, but there are also swap bodies which can be exchanged.

The box body consists of a steel ladder frame and sidewalls out of aluminum or wood. Depending on the purpose of the box body trailer is either out of plywood or thermo-insulated metal walls. Often the box trailer is not fixed to the truck but there are also smaller towing units which have an entry from the driver’s cabin into the box body, these are for example vehicles for parcel services.

A special kind of box body trailers are refrigerated trailers. These are characterized by their closed bodies which have isolated walls for the transport of temperature-sensitive goods like groceries or flowers. This sidewalls of this box body trailer consists out of polyurethane foam and fibre reinforced plastic.

A box body trailer offers a lot of advantages, for example the load is much better protected against weather influences and larceny as in trucks with tarpaulins. Furthermore it is possible to fit the box body with shelves for example for parcel services.

But the box body trailer also has some disadvantages for example it weighs much more than a truck with a platform body and a tarpaulin, which results in a minor payload. Further it is not possible to transport goods which only can be moved with a loading crane.
